Just as predicted, the 2011 Video Music Awards generated even more buzz than last year, with over 3 million tweets sent from 8 p.m. ET at the start of the pre-show until the end of the West Coast broadcast, 11 p.m. PT. Which makes perfect sense when we're talking about a show in which Selena Gomez interviewed Justin Bieber, Britney and Gaga almost made out, and, oh yeah, Beyoncé announced her pregnancy!

Female artists definitely ruled Twitter this year. Bey's baby news made her the most tweeted-about celeb overall, with the first twitpic of her touching her pregnant stomach on the red carpet passing 600,000 views in six hours. In that same six-hour window, the VMA Twitter Tracker clocked the top subject as Nicki Minaj in the first hour, Adele in the next, and then Lady Gaga and Beyoncé alternating in the final hours. But the guys weren't far behind, with Jay-Z and Kanye West (a.k.a. the Throne), Chris Brown, Lil Wayne and Tyler, the Creator giving the ladies a run for their money.

Britney Spears talks about Jo Calderone after their onstage encounter.

For the entire duration of the VMAs, over half of the worldwide Twitter trends were VMA related, and at points they dominated eight or nine of the top 10 trends. Trends tended to coincide with a celeb's arrival (Wiz and Amber), a live interview (Selena and Justin) or the live performances (Adele). But some humorous trends emerged as well: The Karate Kid himself, Ralph Macchio, might have been surprised to see his name trending if he didn't tune in to see his doppelganger, Lady Gaga as Jo Calderone, appearing several times throughout the show. And Happy Trees trended briefly after Rick Ross appeared in a sketch in the show channeling the late painter and personalitya Bob Ross.

The trend #whatwillgagawear was one of the longest running of the evening, as was BEYONCE IS PREGNANT, which clearly called for caps, and #DemiYouAreBeautiful was a message to Demi Lovato from her many fans. Joe Jonas, Bruno Mars, Adele and Justin Bieber were all the subject of trends with words of encouragement started by their supporters.

The Twitter Tracker is continuing to monitor VMA activity, under top 10 celebs to check it out and see who's up in the days following the big show!

Top 10 celebs by number of mentions:

Beyoncé 280,000
Lady Gaga: 237,000
The Throne: 183,000
Adele: 159,000

Lil Wayne: 104,000

Pour Some Sugar On We

Last night my good friend Jen and I made our way down to the Gipson Amphitheater at Universal City to see Def Leppard and Heart in concert. She and I have been really looking forward to this show for MONTHS so we were both really amped on the show. While Def Leppard were the headliners, [...]

Russell Crowe & Hugh Jackman to Star in Le Miserables

Russell Crowe & Hugh Jackman to Star in Le Miserables

Australian superstars Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman are teaming up for the upcoming musical adaptation of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. Crowe has signed on to play the unmerciful Javert to Jackman's selfless Jean Valjean, in Tom Hooper's big-screen version of the legendary Broadway musical.

For those unfamiliar with Hugo's epic 19th century tale, Javert is a stern and callous police inspector who will stop at nothing to recapture Jean Valjean, a reformed prisoner who served a 19-year sentence for stealing bread to feed his hungry nieces and nephews. Even though Valjean has taken on a new identity as a respectable citizen and guardian to a young orphan, Javert is singularly focused on sending him back to prison.

Hooper, the Academy Award-winning director of The King's Speech, will direct the film, which already has a Dec. 7, 2012 release date. According to EW.com, Sir Cameron MacKintosh, who produced the stage production and is a producer of the movie, sys he's overjoyed by the casting:

"Not only were they born to play these roles vocally, but they thrillingly inhabit this great score," he said.

Crowe isn't the only A-lister interested in the adaptation. Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and Geoffrey Rush are also reportedly in talks to star in the film.

Here's a peek at Valjean and Javert's famous "Confrontation" duet. We can't wait to see Jackman and Crowe's take on it.

Trouble Raps From 'Life Experience' On December 17th

'It's just everything that I go through, everything that I see, everything that's in my heart, so that was heartfelt for real,' he tells Mixtape Daily.

Fire Starter: Trouble
For Duct Tape Entertainment's Trouble, December 17 was both the best and worst day of his life. In 2008, the Atlanta MC was jailed on aggravated assault; two years later, on December 17, he was released. So when it came time to name his debut mixtape, Trouble mixed the good with the bad and dubbed it December 17th.

Before jail, the Zone 6 rep only rapped as a hobby — something he picked up on his block at age 15 — but upon his release, he opted to do things legitimately. By April, he dropped his tape. The slow-rolling "World Goes 'Round" was a definite standout. On the heartfelt track, Trouble raps about his grandmother, who is confined to a wheelchair. "My grandma bust her ass and she still ain't got no Medicare/ A car crash, she need money from everywhere/ Just to pay off all these high-ass bills/ I'm tryna put her in a high-ass crib, sittin' on the hills."

"I actually wrote 'World Goes 'Round' while I was doin' my bid, when I sat down," Trouble told Mixtape Daily. "It's just everything that I go through, everything that I see, everything that's in my heart, so that was heartfelt for real."

In the song's video the emotive trap rapper visits a cemetery; it was more than just a glorified scene. "When you see me at my cousin's grave, that's my real cousin," he revealed. "That's everything that's been going on in my life from the beginning on up to this point. So I'm allowing people to go inside of me and understand where I'm coming from."

The rest of December 17th ranges from the hard-knocking "Yeen Heard?" to the bouncy "I Don't Wanna Be Wrong." On "Geek'ed Outta My Mind," Trouble links with MTV Jams' 2011 Fab 5 inductee Future and throws it up for Alley Boy and the rest of his Duct Tape family when he spits, "I'm just a thug who popped out the department of corrections/ A lot of n---as only f--- with Duct Tape 'cause they need protection." But it isn't just thugging for the sake of thugging; on "Fake Industry," Trouble goes out of his way to differentiate himself from rappers who haven't been through the harsh realities he's endured.

"Everything that you hear from me is a life experience," he said.

Bachelor Pad's Ella Enchants Enhances Her Face With Plastic Surgery

Personally, we don't think she needed it, but if it makes her feel beautiful, its her purgative. Besides, it doesn't look like she went overboard … like Heidi Montag overboard anyway. If you've been watching The Bachelor Pad this season, you've probably grown accustomed to Ella Nolan's face. Well, we're here to tell you that she [...]

Madonna's 'W.E.': The Venice Reviews Are In

Material Girl's second directorial effort finds few early supporters at the film fest.
By Eric Ditzian

The Venice Film Festival turned into something of a feeding frenzy on Thursday, as critics practically fell over one another in an effort to drum up the harshest disses and most damning, damaging turns-of-phrase about Madonna's second directorial effort, "W.E."

Their cackles of laughter echoed across the pond the next day, as the Weinstein Company attempted some damage control and a handful of defenders staked out claims that the film had been unjustly dismissed. Those supporters pointed to the lush visual landscape Madonna had captured and the touching love story she'd brought to life.

But the critics weren't having any of it. They slammed the garbled narrative structure, cheesy dialogue and directorial trickery that seemed to serve no other purpose than Madonna's look-at-me self-servitude. Read on for those critiques and more.

The Story
" 'W.E. is rather better than expected; it's bold, confident and not without amusing moments. Still, it's undeniably a strange concoction. Madonna (who also co-scripted with [Alek] Keshishian) has fashioned a split-level story of two couples: the Windsors, and the growing attraction between Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish), a contemporary Manhattan woman, and Evgeni (Oscar Isaac), a handsome Russian working security at Sotheby's. Wally, married to an eminent shrink who isn't above slapping her around, desperately wants children. (He doesn't.) Worse, she has inherited her mother's and grandmother's obsession with the Windsors (Andrea Riseborough, James d'Arcy) and doggedly researches their lives, seeking clues about how to live her own. In extreme moments, Mrs. Simpson actually appears to her." — David Gritten, The Telegraph

The Direction
"What an extraordinarily silly, preening, fatally mishandled film this is. It may even surpass 2008's 'Filth and Wisdom,' Madonna's calamitous first outing as a filmmaker. Her direction is so all over the shop that it barely qualifies as direction at all. 'W.E.' gives us slo-mo and jump cuts and a crawling crane shot up a tree in Balmoral, but they are all just tricks without a purpose. For her big directorial flourish, Madonna has Wallis bound onstage to dance with a Masai tribesman while Pretty Vacant blares on the soundtrack. But why? What point is she making?" — Xan Brooks, The Guardian

The Writing
"The script is the first problem. Co-written with Alek Keshishian, it's laden with clichés and clunky exposition from the off, with some moments drawing laughs from the Venice audience. More fatally, the structure works against what's trying to be achieved. There aren't really any similarities between the characters in the parallel stories, so the one isn't enlightened or embellished by the other. Furthermore, by telling Wallis' story in a somewhat non-linear fashion, jumping around from place to place, it becomes glacially paced and uninvolving, particularly as Madonna seems to steer things away from any actual drama — we never see the moment that Wallis and David first get together, for instance." — Oliver Lyttelton, The Playlist

The Defense
"A lot of people will loathe it, simply because it's been made by Madonna. But if they were to watch it with no knowledge of who directed, they would be pleasantly surprised. They might even find much of it enjoyable, although the odd moment may have them wondering if Madge has committed treason. Whatever your feelings about Ms. Ciccone, it's impossible to refute that her film brings to the screen one of the most compelling love stories in history." — Baz Bamigboye, Daily Mail

The Final Word
"Before it preemed in Venice, advance word on 'W.E.,' Madonna's sophomore feature about Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII, was that it was better than her debut, 'Filth and Wisdom.' Indeed it is, though that's not saying much: Burdened with risible dialogue and weak performances, pic doesn't have much going for it apart from lavish production design and terrific, well-researched costumes — and it's in focus, which is more than can be said for the script. Nevertheless, interest in the subject and her Madgesty alone will ensure substantial royalties internationally." — Leslie Felperin, Variety
