Charlie Sheen on 'Two and a Half Men': "I Would Have Fired My Ass, Too"

Charlie Sheen on 'Two and a Half Men': "I Would Have Fired My Ass, Too"

If you've just gotten comfortable with the tiger blood-drinking, goddess-flaunting, "winning" Charlie Sheen, get ready to readjust your image of him -- again. In a couple of interviews this week, with Jay Leno on The Tonight Show and Matt Lauer on Today, Sheen, 46, presented himself as a clear-headed, sober, much calmer guy who's in on all the jokes that have been made at his expense.

While admitting to Leno that he was "absolutely" out of control in the days after he was fired from Two and a Half Men, the hard-partying actor also pointed out that his many outrageous comments were meant to be funny. "I said some things that were a little out there," Sheen told Leno Thursday night. "I might have overshot the mark a little bit. But these were just metaphors. I didn't really believe I had tiger blood or Adonis DNA. These were just jokes."

Nor is he angry about getting sacked. "No, no. I would have fired my ass, too," Sheen told Leno. "Well, maybe not like they did." Watch an excerpt from the Tonight Show interview below!

Dressed in a dark suit, sipping coffee, Sheen appeared thin, and a shell of his former, Hollywood playboy self. But his calm demeanor and his good will towards Men carried over into his interview with Lauer, too. He even revealed that he plans to watch the new version of the show, starring his replacement, Ashton Kutcher.

"Of course I will," he said.

"With a pang?" asked Lauer.

"Yes, but I'm also really curious about what happened to (my character)," he replied. "Because I don't look at it just as what they're doing forward. I look at it as what I left behind for them to continue and how they're gonna figure all that out. My hat's off to 'em if they can pull it off." (Watch the interview below.)

When Lauer asked whether Sheen would consider doing a future guest spot on Men, he visibly brightened, and even jumped a little in his chair. "I'm completely on board for (a guest appearance)," he said. Then he cut Lauer's next question off, so he could elaborate. "For closure, I could be in the final episode," he says. "Unless I'm really dead. There was no body at the funeral. There was no urn."

In reply, Lauer jokingly confirmed that Sheen's referring to his character's death, not his own. "You had me nervous there for a second," he said. "I was thinking, 'I thought we got past that, and you're OK.'"

In some ways, this was a cheap shot. Clearly, Lauer knew what Sheen was referring to, since it's been widely publicized that his character, Charlie Harper, will be killed off in the season premiere. But after all the off-kilter appearances that Sheen made this spring, you can hardly blame Lauer for the dig.

And he did ask a question for Sheen's diehard fans, the ones who've stuck with him. What would Sheen like them to know? "That I'm not going to let them down," Sheen replied. "When they put down money for a ticket or when they turn the channel that I'm on, that I'm gonna continue to deliver the things that have kept them interested in the last three decades."

It's a good point. Sheen's been a marquee name since the '80s -- remember all the way back to Red Dawn, Ferris Bueller's Day Off or Platoon? -- so in some ways, it's a shame that people mostly associate him with drugs and weird ramblings about warlocks.

And Sheen has some projects lined up, including Roman Coppola's upcoming film A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charlie Swan III and the new in-development TV series Anger Management. About the latter, he told Lauer that it's only loosely based on the Adam Sandler-Jack Nicholson movie of the same name. "I'll play the group counselor," he said. "And I think wherever that group takes place, it's gonna be very interesting."

With Sheen attached to it, there's no doubt that it will be.

'Killer Elite' Is 'More Grown-Up,' Jason Statham Says

Also starring Robert De Niro and Clive Owen, 'This is a thinking man's action movie,' star tells MTV News.

Jason Statham has got nothing against skull-cracking, explosions-for-explosions-sake action flicks. The guy made his name with "The Transporter," after all, and he's getting set for a second go-round opposite Sylvester Stallone in "The Expendables 2."

But "Killer Elite" (September 23), despite a title that suggests it's another in a long line of empty-headed, Statham-starring adventures, is an altogether different creation. Based on a true story that spans the globe from France to Australia, the film stars Statham as an ex-special ops agent on a mission to save his mentor (Robert De Niro), who's being held captive by a secretive military clan and its menacing leader (Clive Owen). There's a grittiness simply not seen in much of Statham's previous work.

"This is something I've been wanting to do for a long time," Statham told MTV News at the Toronto International Film Festival. "This is a thinking man's action movie. It's a bit more grown-up than things in the past I've done. In order to do movies like this, I have to go through and do a few of those as well. There's a lot more going on."

That extends from the words on the page to the guy behind the camera to the dudes mixing it up with Statham when writer/director Gary McKendry yells, "Action!"

"The quality of the script, the quality of the filmmaker — those are two elements that attract living legends like Bob De Niro and Clive Owen," Statham said. "Once I start boxing around with those two, the whole quality of what we're doing changes. It's a big step up."

Check out everything we've got on "Killer Elite."

What do Britney Spears and Usher have in common? Well, they are both global superstars with a back catalogue of tunes that have kept fans dancing for a really long time and they both recently hooked up with will.i.am for tracks on their latest releases (the Black Eyed Peas mastermind worked on the pop vixen's Femme Fatale tune "Big Fat Bass"). And, if Spears has her way, she and the "OMG" singer could be hitting the road together.

When Spears sat down to talk with Sway Calloway for her "Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale" special — airing Sunday (April 3) at 9 p.m. ET on MTV — the singer revealed that Usher is first on her list of artists she'd like to join her on tour.

"Oh, I'm so excited. I'm really excited about going on tour, very," she explained about her forthcoming summer trek, which happens to have a spot open on the bill now that Enrique Iglesias has pulled out of the gig. "I think Usher's really great right now. I think he's really hot right now. That would be cool [to tour with him]."

The North American road trip is expected to kick off June 17 in Sacramento, California, and will run for 26 dates, winding up on August 13 in Toronto. More details will be announced soon.

The "Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale" special is a mixture of behind-the-scenes footage of the singer as she wraps up production on her album, which dropped this week, as well as an inside look at her life and fans. In addition, those who couldn't make Spears' recent nightclub show in Las Vegas will get to see her as she takes the stage in her latest pop incarnation.

Don't miss "Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale," airing Sunday (April 3) at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

Diplomats Reunion Album Coming 'Slowly But Surely'

Diplomatic Immunity 3 being stalled by 'contractual obligations,' Jim Jones tells 'RapFix Live.'

It's been a year since the Diplomats reunited, and though they haven't yet turned around their long-awaited Diplomatic Immunity 3 album, the crew's Capo tells fans to be patient.

"Everybody's been working," Jim Jones said Wednesday on the "RapFix Live" one-year anniversary show. "We took a brief hiatus; we came back together. When we came back together, there were still things that we had to figure out.

"And everybody's on the same page, but above all we all still have contractual obligations, so it kinda makes it a little difficult to get what we want to do done because we want to put total efforts and total concentration on the new things."

In 2007, Jones began speaking publicly about a rift between himself and Dipset head Cam'ron. A number of interviews revealed that both Jones and Juelz Santana had been estranged from the Harlem hitmaker.

By 2010, the childhood friends had put their differences aside and reunited, performing together in concert. In January 2011, Dipset (minus Juelz, who was dealing with a legal issue) appeared on but aside from their 2010 single "Salute" and a few street tracks here and there, the group doesn't seem any closer to releasing its album.

"We been recording slowly but surely," Jones explained. "Me and Cam been going back and forth. Juelz been trying finish his obligation up with Def Jam — he got a lot of pressure on his back.

"But, above all, we here. Me and Cam gonna put out a Fly Boys album, because we got a little bit more leeway right now than Juelz, per se, because he's caught up with a hell of a workload."

Much of the delay is due to the solo contracts each group member signed, but Jones said he's ready. "I'm done, I'm a free agent, so I'm just waiting for everybody else to join," he explained. "But it's definitely coming: Diplomatic Immunity 3. The camaraderie is there; the brotherhood is back. It feels good."

Them Crooked Vultures make their debut with a post-Lollapalooza set.
By James Montgomery

Officially, Lollapalooza ended Sunday night in Chicago's Grant Park, with dueling sets from the Killers and Jane's Addiction. Unofficially, it ended very early Monday morning, across town at venerable rock club the Metro, with a surprise show by Them Crooked Vultures.

To the unfamiliar, the Vultures might seem like an odd choice to close out Lolla weekend ... until you realize that they're made up of Foo Fighters frontman/ former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age mastermind Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones. And their gig at the Metro was their world premiere.

According to some reports, the Vultures actually turned down Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell's request to replace the Beastie Boys as headliners at the festival, opting to debut in front of some 1,100 super-psyched fans at the Metro, rather than 75,000 in Grant Park (tickets for the gig were announced via Foo Fighter/ QOTSA fan clubs). Meaning that, in a lot of ways, this was the most sought-after ticket in town.

Taking the stage just after midnight, the Vultures — Grohl on drums (of course), Homme on guitar and vocals, Jones on bass and keys and frequent QOTSA contributor Alain Johannes on guitar — ripped through 12 songs in 80 minutes, all taken from their upcoming debut, which may or may not be called Never Deserved the Future, and may or may not be hitting stores on October 23 (early "promo" videos touting both those facts were revealed over the weekend to be hoaxes perpetrated by QOTSA fans).

The songs, with appropriately Homme-ian titles like "Scumbag Blues," "Mind Eraser (No Chaser)," "Caligulove" and "Interlude w/Ludes," sounded pretty much how you'd expect, given the band's pedigree. They rocked, hard — Chicago Tribune critic Greg Kot described them as "fresh, invigorating and just plain nasty" — delving off into psychedelic, reverb-filled excursions and exploring proggy territory, "both of the old-school Yes variety, and the more modern Tool flavor," according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Jim DeRogatis.

It's not known if Monday's Metro performance was a one-off event for the Vultures — there have been whispers of a full-blown tour, but a spokesperson for Homme had not responded to MTV News' request for comment at press time. Nor was it clear whether or not they'll have an album out in October.

Early Monday, a Crooked Vultures Twitter account, which had previously posted links to the band's official-looking Web site and the Metro's online ticketing site — posted a link to what appears to be the group's first bit of official merchandise: a Deserve the Future T-shirt. Cost: $30.

Michael Jackson's Legacy, Two Years Later, By the Numbers

Legendary singer's impact continues to blossom in the two years since his death; MTV News breaks down the figures.
By Gil Kaufman

Like Elvis, Bob Marley, Notorious B.I.G. and Frank Sinatra before him, Michael Jackson's influence has continued, and grown, since his untimely death on June 25, 2009.

On the second anniversary of the King of Pop's passing, MTV News took a look at the enduring appeal of MJ's music, videos and imagery, which continue to fascinate and attract fans across the globe thanks to a series of posthumous albums, a movie, video games and two upcoming Cirque du Soleil live shows.

Where Were You Two Years Ago When You Heard the News? Tell Us on Facebook

$72 million: According to Box Office Mojo, Jackson's posthumous concert film, "This Is It," has grossed more than $72 million to date domestically and $189 million in foreign markets for a worldwide take over more than $261 million. It ranks as the #2 music documentary of all-time behind Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never." The film has also generated nearly $45 million in DVD sales in the U.S.

16: In May, Jackson lodged his first #1 on the Billboard magazine Dance/ Club Play Songs chart in 16 years with the latest single from his posthumous Michael album, "Hollywood Tonight."

2: Number of posthumous albums that have been released since Michael's death in June 2009. Last year's Michael has sold just over 510,000 copies to date, while the This Is It collection has moved nearly 1 million copies to date in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

15,000: The number of videos submitted by fans since March for the crowdsourced video for "Behind the Mask." After they were edited down by a five-person team over two months, the resulting clip used submissions from more than 1,600 participants from 103 countries.

3 million: The amount of copies sold of the Ubisoft "Michael Jackson: The Experience" video game worldwide.

$57 million: The reported cost of Cirque du Soleil's traveling MJ show, "The Immortal World Tour, which is slated to kick off on October 2.

$1 billion: That gaudy figure is the reported amount the Jackson estate had generated by last June on the first anniversary of the singer's death. According to Billboard, the revenue was generated by a combination of music sales ($429 million), film/TV revenue ($392 million), music publishing ($130 million), licensing ($35 million) and a $31 million recording contract. (A spokesperson for Jackson's estate declined to provide updated figures for this story.)

$310 million: The amount of gross earnings reported by the executors of the estate in a December 2010 court filing detailing the progress made in paying off the $400 million in debt run up by the spendthrift singer during his lifetime.

16.1 million: MJ was always a big singles artist. Yes, Thriller is one of the best-selling albums of all time, but even in death, fans can't resist cherry-picking some of Michael's best songs. That explains why he's sold more than 16 million digital tracks since June 28, 2009, the first sales week following his passing, according to Nielsen SoundScan. To put that in perspective, from the time Nielsen began counting digital tracks in 2004 until the week before Jackson's death, the singer had sold just over 8.1 million digital tracks, a figure that has doubled in just the past two years.

2013: The projected launch for a second, non-touring Cirque show celebrating Jackson. The yet-untitled show is slated to open in the spring of 2013 at a new theater being built at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

$25 million to $50 million: That's how much Jackson's estate takes in on an annual basis thanks to his stake in the half-million-song Sony/ATV catalog, which includes titles by Elvis, Lady Gaga, Eminem, Beyoncé and Bob Dylan.

Just after news hit that Justin Bieber had been involved in a minor car accident, the teen pop star, his manager and his producer began releasing details about his forthcoming Christmas album, including a possible Taylor Swift collaboration.

In a Twitter conversation with his manager, Scooter Braun, the pair revealed more info about the album, even sharing that it won't contain the holiday standards fans might expect. "This Christmas album is amazing. Might be the best album yet," Scooter Braun wrote on the social networking site. "All originals ... soon 2 b classics. every1 i play it 4 is blown away. #excited."

The 17-year-old superstar then shared, "@scooterbraun yeah we are going hard for Christmas!! #mistletoe." He later revealed that he had been recording tracks with some of his pals. "Had a great studio session with my big bro @seankingston and the talented @jonathanrotem #GOODMUSIC."

Producer Kuk Harrell (Rihanna, Katy Perry) has also been tweeting about hitting the studio with the singer and revealed another collaboration. "Wow!! Got to see @justinbieber & @taylorswift13 write a song together last night!!" he shared last week. "SMASH!!!! SMASH!!! SMASH!!! Let's do it again y'all!!!" Bieber hit the stage with Swift during one of her shows in Los Angeles last week.

Perhaps as a hint of what is to come, Bieber also retweeted a message from Braun in which Braun said, "Goin 2 bed listening 2 this new xmas album bieber is coming with. really #classic. original xmas tunes that r legit hit records. #greatmusic."

Bieber has been working hard on new music, both holiday-themed and other. When MTV News caught up with him earlier this summer, he wanted his fans to know that anything is possible on his next album. "[I'm] writing about how I feel and producing. I've been producing on my laptop and on my computer," he said. "I've been really into it and, hopefully, this next album will be huge."

He added, "I've done a lot on my acoustic guitar, so it's gonna have that vibe," he explained. "I'm not gonna really limit myself. I think music is music, and genre — I mean, I know there's country music, there's rock music, but my music is different. My voice is not meant for any style. I just want to make music."
