Singer says 'it got bloody' when he was attacked by a group of young men last month in New York City.
By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker
Getting ready for the release of his fourth studio album, Sweeter, singer Gavin DeGraw dropped by MTV News' studios to discuss his excitement for the album, his upcoming tour with "American Idol" alum David Cook, and, of course, to give us the full story behind the unfortunate "incident" that landed the singer in the emergency room last month.
"I'm so excited about touring for this record," Gavin said, bursting with excitement. "I think that the music on this record is going to make for a really exciting show."
The always-smiling soul/rock singer of smash hits like "I Don't Want to Be," "Chariot" and "In Love With a Girl" is excited to bring together all of his music for one epic show when he hits the road with Cook this fall.
Judging by his hearty laughter and great enthusiasm for his new material, you'd never guess that the soulful rock singer had recently taken a severe beating by a group of unidentified men in New York City's East Village late one summer night.
Gavin had a night off in New York City while touring with Maroon 5 and Train and decided to spend it with a few friends at the National Underground, a New York City bar he co-owns with his brother.
"I had a few drinks, and I put them in a cab," Gavin recalled. "Typically, when I'm at that place, I'll walk home afterwards. I walk a few blocks, and then I cross paths with some people who had something to say to me."
Gavin explained that is where details became hazy and "it got bloody."
When the attackers fled, Gavin was left to get himself to the emergency room, but the misfortune didn't end there.
"I ended up having to go to the hospital in an ambulance," Gavin said. "What they think is either I got hit by a cab or I went over and grabbed the handle of the cab to get in and this guy just saw some bloody dude trying to get into his car and hit the gas, which knocked me off into the sidewalk."
Despite the terrible night, Gavin remains very positive about his relationship with his family, friends, fans and New York City itself.
"I happened to have a rough night in New York," Gavin said in defense of the city that never sleeps. "But the whole night wasn't rough. Actually for the most part, the night was amazing. I just had a rough couple of minutes at the end of it."
Gavin likened the poor circumstances of that night to gambling. "If New York was a casino, the odds are pretty good. I've had thousands of great nights out in New York, and I lost at the roulette wheel one night, but I usually win big money."
Gavin had a word of advice for people who know someone who finds him- or herself in similar circumstances: "If something does happen to a friend of theirs or a loved one, it does go a long way when you just even send a text message out to somebody. Just the distraction of having someone reach out to you is actually pleasant."

On Sunday night, some of the biggest names in the music industry hit up the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas and decided that sparkles and sequins make for the perfect additions to any red carpet get-up. Well, it is Sin City after all.
Taylor Swift always seems to bring some of that Nashville sparkle to any red carpet. She arrived at the show in a pale-hued, sequined Elie Saab gown. Nicki Minaj showed off her signature sense of style in her baby-blue, body-hugging spandex Mark Fast catsuit.
Selena Gomez turned up the style dial in a sexy, cut-out black Dolce & Gabbana gown that she paired with red strappy sandals with sparkly bow detailing. Like Gomez, Ke$ha opted for some cut-out detailing in her sparkly, slate-gray dress with tulle skirt. Rihanna looked white hot in her men's tailored Max Azria suit, which she kept sexy and feminine by not buttoning her shirt all the way.
Fergie went S&M chic in her little black bandage-type dress by Hervé Léger. Nicole Kidman also wore black. She paired a casual braid hairstyle with a long black gown and Keith Urban. British pop cutie Kyle Minogue looked funky in her little black lacey dress. Inside the show, Britney Spears sat in the audience wearing a skimpy black dress of her own, her hair in loose curls, with little-to-no accessories.
While some stars kept the color scheme low-key, Keri Hilson decided to stand out in her billowy little yellow dress paired with a turquoise-colored belt. Kelly Rowland showed off some of her best assets in a body-hugging, bright pink bandage dress.
The fellas also looked tight on the carpet. Joe Jonas wore all black with white sneakers, Ne-Yo paired his periwinkle suit with a Yankees cap and Justin Bieber wore black tuxedo pants with a gold-lamé tuxedo jacket.
Which stars' styles caught your eye at the Billboard Music Awards? Tell us in the comments.

John Mayer has canceled his upcoming shows and delayed his next album after being diagnosed with a serious throat condition known as granumola. The singer-songwriter, best known for his smooth voice, impressive guitar skills and (of course) extensive dating history, revealed the condition in a post on his official blog Friday.
While Mayer did not go into the severity of his situation directly, he did say that the condition is something his doctors have been monitoring for a while and is serious enough for him to scratch all plans to perform in the foreseeable future.
"After several months of going week to week monitoring and hoping to correct the condition, I am forced to cancel my upcoming singing engagements due to something next to my vocal cords called a granuloma," Mayer wrote. (Granuloma are localized nodular inflammations that are found in tissues and can vary in severity.)
Among those engagements the "Your Body Is A Wonderland" singer has nixed are his gig at the upcoming iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas this weekend, as well as his appearance with Tony Bennett in Los Angeles on Sept. 24. He also has been forced to push back the release date of his next album, Born and Raised, due to the ailment.
"Born and Raised is complete as far as music recording, song selection, and in some cases mixing, but because of this condition I couldn't finish singing on several of the tracks," Mayer revealed. "This means the record will be released next year instead of this fall or winter." Mayer had been testing out the new material at concerts around the country over the past year.
Despite the condition, Mayer seems optimistic about his recovery and his return to the music scene. "This is a temporary setback, though I'm not sure how long or short a period of time it will be," Mayer wrote. "I've got the best doctors in the country looking after me and I will be singing and touring again as soon as I get the all clear."
And he doesn't plan to stay idle during his downtime. "Until then I'll be spending time writing and composing more music and kicking an empty soup can around the West Village," he wrote. "I'm looking forward to seeing you again soon. Until then take good care."

Young love ruled the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. Justin Bieber and girlfriend Selena Gomez had the ultimate date night, and the entire world was watching.
It all kicked off when the black-carpet VMA Pre-Show started on Sunday (August 28); the couple's adorableness would have viewers "awww"-ing throughout the night. Gomez, who was doing a stint as the pre-show co-host, spoke to a number of celebrities, including Britney Spears and bestie Demi Lovato, but things really got interesting when the Biebs showed up.
Bieber -- wearing glasses, red pants, leopard-print kicks and a tuxedo jacket -- stopped to chat with Gomez, who was decked out in a lacey black mini-dress.
"I have a snake. I have red pants and cheetah shoes. My snake's name is Johnson," he said when Gomez asked about his outfit.
The singer/actress continued to press him in the most professional way about his Best Male Video nod, and Bieber played it cool standing next to his girl. "I'm just excited to be in the category with such amazing people," he told her.
Bieber, a long time Beyoncé fan, admitted he was excited to see her perform, as well as Kanye West and Jay-Z. While Selena tried hard to remain professional, Bieber made their encounter even more adorable when he leaned in to kiss her cheek.

By the time the show started, Beyoncé and Jay-Z had announced their own good news, but the young pop stars were a bit less coy about their romance. In fact, despite Kim Kardashian's best efforts to flirt with Bieber as she presented him with the Moonman for Best Male Video for "U Smile," it was clear from the way he kissed Selena as he made his way to the stage that he only has eyes for one girl.

Sinead O'Connor has become one of the most unfiltered celebrities on Twitter -- and that may not always be a good thing. Last week, the 44-year-old "Nothing Compares 2 U" singer shocked her followers by writing openly about wanting to kill herself. She has spent the following days attempting to explain her suicidal thoughts, and why she doesn't regret airing them to the entire world.
O'Connor, who was divorced from her third husband in March, recently gained attention (and Twitter followers!) from her semi-obscene tweets about her sexual desires. But last Wednesday, her Twitter feed took a surprisingly dark turn.
"Had to go psychiatrist for routine renew prescription etc. She says I'm a bad mum and mental for talking so openly about sex in public," wrote the Irish musician. "So now I wish suicide wud kill me," she added -- and she was just getting started.
"I f***ing hate Ireland so much," she continued. "All this s*** we're not supposed to say. Including suicidal feelings, sex, etc. U just get treated like a crazy person. I want to go to heaven SO bad. Have for yrs. But I don't wanna abandon my kids. But if I cud die without them knowing I did it myself I wud."
The mother of four continued by saying that she wrote her wildly sexual tweets to cheer herself up from post-divorce depression, and it worked until a visit with the psychiatrist made her feel horribly guilty. She even begged her Twitter followers to tell her how she could kill herself without her kids finding out she did it deliberately.
Understandably, people were very worried, even sending the police to her home. But on Thursday, O'Connor apologized for "getting so upset" and assured everyone that she was "fine" and "well" after finding a new doctor.
In an editorial for Sunday's Irish Independent, O'Connor wrote that she had no regrets about her "cry for help."
"There is no shame in feeling suicidal. Nor in anyone knowing that that wave passes over you sometimes," says the singer. "No one should be judged badly for however it is they choose to make their cry for help.
"I am not at all sorry that I wrote what I did on Twitter. It was a cry for help and help was received. So it was worth it. I have no shame around the fact that I can be shot into suicidal feelings by certain people's treatment of me. I am no different to any other person, I therefore act as I believe any other person should be free to."
Basically, it sounds like airing her suicidal thoughts was therapeutic for O'Connor. But does that make up for all the fans who were worried sick, thinking they were watching helplessly as she debated ending her life? It's one of those thorny questions that didn't exist before Twitter. At least things have returned to normal for O'Connor's followers: She's back to cheerfully tweeting about her sex life.

'What do you do after 16 Grammys and millions of records sold? Whatever makes you happy,' singer says in new video.
By Jocelyn Vena
Just two weeks before she took to the VMA stage on Sunday night, Beyoncé dazzled in a four-night set at New York's Roseland Ballroom. Little did anyone know then that the singer was keeping a big secret: that she and hubby Jay-Z are expecting their first child together.
Now fans are getting an insider's view of what it took to put those shows together. "What do you do after 16 Grammys and millions of records sold?" Beyoncé asks in the second of two behind-the-scenes videos that just hit the Internet. "Whatever makes you happy," she answers.
During the shows, Beyoncé recalled the highlights of her career during a mind-bending medley of oldies. "That concept is really smart and emotional and you see me as a human being more than just music ... let's tell the story. It's more intimate; it's cooler than me just talking," she explains in the video.
Relive Beyoncé's big night at the VMAs in photos!
With more behind-the-scenes videos expected to drop, Beyoncé says that she wanted to perform this way because "I feel like I know who I am and I don't have to put myself in a box and no one can define me. All I have to do is have fun and have artistic freedom to do whatever I want."
In previously released footage, some of the people who helped shape the show also talked about how B was preparing for the gigs. Bibi, who played lead guitar, said, "She's listening to her inner voice right now and doing what she wants to do. I think she took risks. I think she's being more authentic and doing what she wants to do instead of doing what people expect, which is good."
Beyoncé and Jay-Z celebrate their big news backstage.
Nick, the lighting designer for the shows, explained the visual concept for them. The stage setup was pretty simple — just Beyoncé surrounded by her band and backup dancers, singing her heart out. "The big moments on the album will make the look from the lighting really big, and then when it comes down to songs like '1+1,' it'll be one spotlight," he explained.
The bottom line, according to the show's musical director, Kim Burse, is that "this project is the most mature project for Beyoncé because to be able to be in an intimate setting like this is an amazing thing."
