Michael Jackson's former personal physician Dr. Conrad Murray entered a plea of not guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter in the June 2009 death of the pop star at his arraignment on Tuesday morning (January 25).

According to the Los Angeles Times, when asked by judge Michael Pastor how he pleaded to the charge, Murray said, "Your honor, I am an innocent man." When Pastor interrupted and asked Murray what his plea was, the cardiologist said, "Therefore, I plead not guilty."

The brief hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court ended with Pastor setting a March 28 date for the start of a trial in the case. Murray faces a maximum of four years in prison if convicted, and the Times noted that he surprised the judge by invoking his right to a speedy trial, which meant the case would have to begin by late March. Pastor noted the rarity of a defendant asking to have a speedy trial, then set jury selection for the week of March 28 and said he was inclined to allow television coverage of the trial that the defense expects will last two months.

Lawyers for Murray have maintained his innocence all along, saying he did not do anything that "should have" caused the 50-year-old pop icon's death. The Los Angeles County Coroner's office determined that Jackson died of an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol mixed with a cocktail of other sedatives.

Murray has admitted to administering propofol to Jackson in the hours before the singer's death, but the defense appears to be gearing up to claim that it was Jackson who administered the final, fatal dose of the drug after he woke in a panic from a fitful night of sleep.

During a preliminary hearing earlier this month to determine if there was enough evidence to hold Murray over for trial, the physician's attorneys said that there was evidence Jackson injected or drank a fatal amount of the drug when the doctor was not looking.

Lady Gaga's Born This Way: The Reviews Are In!

'It's a storming collection of high-concept pop brilliance,' says one critic of Mother Monster's brand-new album.

Little Monsters, the wait is over! After almost a year since Lady Gaga first dished out details about the project, her Born This Way album has finally arrived.

With endorsement deals from Starbucks, Google and Zynga's "FarmVille," Gaga and her team have crafted an over-the-top marketing plan to make sure everyone under the sun knows that the LP has hit stores. As one of the year's most anticipated releases, Born This Way is expected to debut with high sales ranging from 450,000 to 750,000 copies, according to Billboard estimates.

Much like her costumes, performances and everything else that is Lady Gaga, critics have noted (and mostly praised) the immensity of Born This Way, while name-dropping Madonna every other review. For a deeper look at what the press says Mother Monster has to offer on the new album, read on.

Lyrical Content/Themes
"All over Born This Way, she takes on the big topics dear to her heart: sex, religion, muscle cars, her hair. She sings in French, German, Spanish and whatever language wants to claim 'punk-tious.' She seduces men, women, deities and dead presidents. ('Put your hands on me/ John F. Kennedy' — hey, it rhymes.) And in 'Heavy Metal Lover,' Gaga purrs the immortal pickup line 'I want your whiskey mouth/ All over my blond south.' " — Rob Sheffield, Rolling Stone

Production
"Enthrallingly, though, the album never lets up, as her producers chuck entire studios at her fulsome vocals. Many songs here are crafted from radically different tunes all stitched together for an attention-deficit generation: A song may start with an intro from one genre, segue into a verse from another, switchback into a surprise pre-chorus, follow that with a fist-pump major-chord chorus, before inserting a hard-edged clubby middle eight." — Kitty Empire, The Guardian

Choruses
"Choruses seem to be the problem with all of the album's singles so far. And what's a pop song without a good hook? The speed metal-meets-'Bad Romance' knock-off 'Judas' is lyrically more interesting than 'Born This Way,' but its Aqua-esque chorus is too sweet and poppy for a torch song dedicated to one of the Bible's greatest villains. The electro-rock ballad — and accidental third single — 'The Edge of Glory' isn't retro so much as retrograde, starting off with some crafty Art of Noise synth tones before morphing into what sounds like the theme song to an early-'90s sitcom, or an inspirational sports flick, as sung by Bonnie Tyler." — Sal Cinquemani, Slant Magazine

Influences
"The album has abundant echoes of the 1980s: not just Madonna, Lady Gaga's obvious predecessor in many things, but also the heft and piano pounding of '80s heartland rock. Clarence Clemons of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band plays saxophone on two songs, and for the rafter-raising power ballad 'You and I,' Lady Gaga turned to Mutt Lange, who produced thickly layered tracks for Def Leppard in the 1980s. (Mr. Lange, in turn, brought in Brian May, the guitarist in Queen, the band whose song 'Radio Ga Ga' gave her a name.)" — Jon Pareles, The New York Times

The Last Note
"This is not quite the revolution, and certainly not the greatest album ever made. It's a storming collection of high-concept pop brilliance designed to soundtrack every preposterously tremendous Gaga moment for the next 18 months. If there's a gripe to be had, it's regarding the length: At an hour long, Born This Way initially feels more like an assault than an event, and it could easily lose a couple of tracks. However, if she is planning on releasing nine singles from it, then nobody can come away feeling ripped off." — Ian Wade, BBC Music

Prince William, Kate Middleton Meet the Obamas

Prince William, Kate Middleton Meet the Obamas

Fresh off their honeymoon in the Seychelles, a tanned and happy-looking Prince William and Kate Middleton (now known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge) greeted President Barack and first lady Michelle Obama at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday.

The conversation was reportedly "relaxed," and the two couples chatted for 20 minutes about the royal wedding (which the Obamas had not attended), as well as William and Kate's upcoming visit to the United States. Greeting the Obamas was the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's first official duty as a royal couple.

The Obamas are on the first leg of their European tour, having spent Monday in Ireland, where they were reportedly given a rock-star reception. While the first couple had planned to stay longer in Ireland, the trip was abbreviated due to fears that the ash from the recent volcanic explosion in Iceland would delay their flights.

Arriving at Buckingham Palace from Ireland late on Monday, the President and First Lady were greeted personally by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Following the brief chat with William, 28, and Kate, 29, the President and first lady stepped out onto the garden terrace for their official welcome to the U.K. They were given a 41-gun salute by Scots Guards, and listened to renditions of the countries' respective national anthems.

Following lunch with Queen Elizabeth, Obama visited Westminster Abbey and laid a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, the same place that Kate had sent her bridal bouquet following the wedding, according to tradition.

Tuesday night, the Obamas will be joined by 200 dignitaries and royals for the State Banquet. Interestingly, William and Kate will not be in attendance at the banquet, nor were they present at the the lunch with Queen Elizabeth. Their absence at these events is perhaps meant to emphasize that, despite their notoriety, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are not actual working members of the royal family.

The Obamas will be staying at Buckingham Palace for two nights, in the same six-room suite where William and Kate spent their wedding night.

Randy Jackson Billboard Music Awards: Fashion Fail!

I am very excited about the new transformers film. It is always a fun summer blockbuster, and without Megan Fox, it is bound to be the best one yet! ?Early response to footage, especially the 3D footage, has been great so we want to get the word out that this film is as good or better than the first and much better than the last,? an insider just told me. It?s the only action movie opening between June 24th and July 15th.? It also gets a nice jump start on those weekend box office numbers. So it is not that big of a move for the fans, but we will definitely enjoy seeing it on humpday instead of Friday! The film will obviously do very well, as have the past two. In case you have yet to check out the trailer I posted it below. I am a sucker for Shia. I just have a feeling he is going to be huge ? like in a Brad Pitt kind of way. He is extremely talented, and he flies under the radar, not sucking up all the attention like some of the actors out there who have experienced 5 seconds of [...]

Beyonce To Premiere 'Run The World (Girls)' On 'American Idol'

MTV News confirms the video will premiere on the show on Wednesday.

After delaying the premiere of her "Run the World (Girls)" video, MTV News has confirmed that Beyoncé will finally drop the video on Wednesday during "American Idol."

A label rep confirms that the video will hit the Web and other networks shortly after the West Coast broadcast of the show. "Run the World (Girls)" was originally slated to debut online last Friday, but a rep for Vevo.com confirmed to MTV News at the time that Beyoncé and her team were still putting the finishing touches on the Francis Lawrence-directed video.

A teaser for the video gave fans a taste of what they could expect from the full-length clip. In it, Beyoncé, dressed in high-fashion couture, and her super-cool-looking supermodel pals fend off an opposing army in a post-apocalyptic world.

"It'll be big, it'll probably be one of the bigger Beyoncé music videos ever done," Lawrence told MTV News recently. "And I can say that I think the song is unbelievable." He added, "I think the video's gonna be really fun and cool and different for her."

The song is the lead single off Beyoncé's forthcoming album 4. "It's definitely riskier than something a bit more ... simple," the singer told Billboard.com. "I just heard the track and loved that it was so different. It felt a bit African, a bit electronic and futuristic. It reminded me of what I love, which is mixing different cultures and eras — things that typically don't go together — to create a new sound.

"I can never be safe; I always try and go against the grain. As soon as I accomplish one thing, I just set a higher goal," she continued. "That's how I've gotten to where I am."

Lady Gaga Wanted To Go 'Full Mexicano' On 'Americano'

Born This Way producer Fernando Garibay says song was inspired by Proposition 8 ruling.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kara Warner

Lady Gaga dabbled in Latin-sounding music on Fame Monster with "Alejandro," but for Born This Way, Gaga took that sound to a whole new level on "Americano," a charging, no-holds-barred statement about love of all kinds, played up against the chugging backdrop of Spanish guitar, horns and a disco-ready beat.

"The song was directly inspired by events that happened that day. It was in August, in the middle of summer, last year, and it was when Prop 8 was overturned in California," producer Fernando Garibay told MTV News of the controversial ruling that banned gay marriage in the state. "And there was a lot happening with immigration and the border issues and she pushed, she said she wanted to make this song really Mexican, with the struggle the Mexican people have gone through for freedom, for a better life, and so those ideas are directly implemented in the song."

Gaga, a Proposition 8 opponent, tweeted shortly after the ruling that she was inspired to write music. "At the moments notice of PROP 8 DEATH I instantly began to write music," she wrote in August. "REJOICE and CELEBRATE gay communities and straight all over the world. Our voices are being heard! Loud! SCREAM LOUD AMERICANOS!" The "Americano" lyrics directly address that momentous occasion. On the song, Gaga sings, "If you love me, we can marry on the West Coast/ On a Wednesday, en el verano, en agosto."

Garibay explained that while she might shed light on gay rights lyrically, she's hoping to bring attention to immigration laws in the United States sonically.

"I remember her saying, 'Yes, I want mariachi, I want Latin percussions. I want to go big.' I'm so used to people in the industry saying, 'Latin: It's a little bit cheesy,' " he said. "But she was like, 'F that! Let's go full Mexicano.' We started with me on guitar and her on piano, kind of wrote the lyric on the spot, and she sang it all the way through, and that's how the song was born."
