All will be revealed on Wednesday night (July 20) when MTV presents a live 2011 MTV Video Music Awards nominations announcement special, unveiling the roster of artists who will be vying for Moonmen at the August 28 show.
The special will air at 11 p.m. ET/ 8 p.m. PT and feature surprise guests spreading the good news. It will be followed by a special VMA nomination live stream on MTV.com that will serve up even more special guests and music experts employing Skype, Twitter and Facebook to give post-VMA nominee-announcement commentary and reactions.
This year's VMAs return once more to Los Angeles, where the 28th annual show will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
The 2010 VMAs put up the best ratings numbers for any MTV telecast since 2002, with 11.4 million viewers turning in to catch much-anticipated performances by Taylor Swift (who debuted a new song, "Innocent," addressing last year's controversy with Kanye West) and West himself, who also debuted a new track, "Runaway," which addressed his fall from pop-culture grace. The show also featured performances by rappers Eminem, Drake and Best New Artist winner Justin Bieber. Then newcomer Nicki Minaj announced her arrival on the world stage with her first-ever solo TV performance, a memorable take on her single "Your Love."
The show was action packed, with additional performances from Linkin Park, Florence + the Machine, Usher, and B.o.B with Bruno Mars and Hayley Williams of Paramore.

Yesterday, our partner site Movie Fanatic featured an interview with Captain America himself, Chris Evans. Now they bring us a sit-down with Hayley Atwell, the beautiful British actress who plays his love interest on screen.
Atwell's Peggy Carter feels an instant bond with Steve Rogers, who goes on to become Captain America. The actress talked about the role in detail, on top of dishing on sex scenes and what her ideal type of guy is in real life.

Their brand spanking new single ?Lonely Lullaby? dropped today (listen below!) and Owl City continues to prove themselves as a legitimate force to be reckoned with in the pop music genre.
GossipCenter caught up with Minnesotan mastermind Adam Young, who was kind enough to answer a few questions for us regarding everything from his fabulous new album All Things Bright and Beautiful to his favorite on-tour eateries, and his unapologetic faith.
Adam noted that the process for writing and recording ATBAB was a logical next step from his days in the studio working on his breakthrough album Ocean Eyes. ?It was a lot sneakier. I literally hid in a dark underground room with candles and kerosene lamps for three months while I wrote, recorded and mixed the new record. I wore my pajamas for most of the time. Sometimes I would forget to eat. My skin turned ghostly white. My friends and family thought I died. By all accounts, it was incredibly sneaky.?
Looking back to his career with Sky Sailing, Young joked that he?d plumped up a bit. ?I eat a lot of donuts so I've definitely put on a few pounds since the Sky Sailing days, but thankfully I wear a suit onstage so I sweat a lot on tour and that's like what wrestling bros do to ?cut weight? in high school, so I feel pretty good about myself. Musically, I feel like my mind can handle a bigger dosage of ?vision? these days and I love willing a song into existence and watching what happens as it basically writes itself. I love the idea of writing from the imagination and letting the mind do all the dirty work for me. Songwriting has become much more fluid since the Sky Sailing days and I quite like that.?
Earlier this year, Adam released a cover version of a popular hymn called ?In Christ Alone,? which not only identified him as a Christian, but also shed some light on his dedication to stay true to his faith. ?Ironically I'm reading [Dr. John Piper?s] ?Desiring God? right now on the tour bus and John speaks a lot about what is means to be a Christian Hedonist, which was a term I wasn't familiar with until recently. I attend Piper's [Bethlehem Baptist] church in Minnesota and the man speaks with authority! I'm no seminary alumni, but I desire to make my Savior proud because I can only answer for myself.?
When it comes time to chow down on the road, the ?Fireflies? singer has a long list places he prefers- ?Taco Bell, Applebee?s, Chipotle, Jack in the Box, Chic Fil-A, McDonald's, Culver's, Taco John's, In-N-Out Burger, Cheesecake Factory, Burger King, KFC, Arby's, Subway, Jimmy John's, Pizza Hut, Dairy Queen, Cracker Barrel and all of the above.?
And anyone who has seen Owl City live knows the intensity and dedication Young puts into every performance. ?My secret is getting sick. Every tour I inevitably get a nasty cough and cold that are impossibly hard to get rid of, and so I take fistfuls of vitamins and Mucinex every other hour, and by the time I climb onstage, my sinuses feel like a pair of breezy Grand Canyons.?
Young noted that while his lyrical subject matter may seem abstract at times, he loves letting go of reality and embracing whatever catches his fancy. ?I like letting my imagination run wild because you never know what's going to happen. NEVER!?
One such example is ?Galaxies,? based on his childhood experience with seeing the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster on the news. ?My parents always spoke of the Challenger when I was a small boy and I grew up imagining what it would've been like had I been the flight commander of that ship. I wondered what I would've thought/felt as the ship exploded and I were taken from reality into eternity in an instant. The song is about what I would say for myself, how I would answer for my life if I were standing face to face with God.?
Young and his Owl City cohorts are making their way across the USA before heading overseas for some international shenanigans and tom foolery.

Clip offers glimpse of villain Bane in action while Liam Neeson's Ra's Al Ghul resurfaces in voiceover.

In exactly one year and two days, the Dark Knight will rise for the last time under the direction of Christopher Nolan.
Fans flocking to the cinemas over the weekend to see "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" were lucky enough to catch the first teaser trailer of "The Dark Knight Rises," the final installment of Nolan's Batman trilogy. But now the official trailer has hit the Internet, teasing an apocalyptic conclusion to the beloved series.
The latest clip appropriately teases the two elements of "The Dark Knight Rises" that have fans already so riled up. First off, a voiceover by Liam Neeson's "Batman Begins" character, Ra's Al Ghul, implies the connection to the first Batman movie that moviegoers have long suspected.
"If you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal, then you become something else entirely," he whispers. "A legend, Mr. Wayne, a legend."
When we last saw Batman, he was going into hiding after the destruction caused by the Joker and Two-Face. But the Batman must rise, and in new footage from the trailer, it's Batman's old friend, Commissioner Gordon, who asks him to do so. "We were in this together, and then you were gone," says an incapacitated Gordon, played by Gary Oldman. "And now this evil rises. The Batman has to come back."
"This evil," the second key trailer element, seems to imply Bane, the new "Dark Knight" villain played by Tom Hardy. Several shots of Bane are mixed in with the final moments of the trailer, a follow-up to the previously released photo of the man who broke the Bat. Among these images is also the first shot of Christian Bale as Batman in "The Dark Knight Rises."
The final look in the trailer — Gotham City's skyscrapers crumbling down in a shape of the Bat symbol — hearkens back to the poster released last week. It certainly seems to imply that Gotham City might be destroyed while the Dark Knight does rise.
There are still several characters left unseen, though, including Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard in presumed there-must-be-more-to-it-than-that roles. The Neeson voiceover opens up a whole new can of worms when it comes to the theory that Cotillard is actually playing Ra's Al Ghul's daughter, Talia Al Ghul, though whether that concept comes to fruition remains to be seen.

Them Crooked Vultures make their debut with a post-Lollapalooza set.

Officially, Lollapalooza ended Sunday night in Chicago's Grant Park, with dueling sets from the Killers and Jane's Addiction. Unofficially, it ended very early Monday morning, across town at venerable rock club the Metro, with a surprise show by Them Crooked Vultures.
To the unfamiliar, the Vultures might seem like an odd choice to close out Lolla weekend ... until you realize that they're made up of Foo Fighters frontman/ former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age mastermind Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones. And their gig at the Metro was their world premiere.
According to some reports, the Vultures actually turned down Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell's request to replace the Beastie Boys as headliners at the festival, opting to debut in front of some 1,100 super-psyched fans at the Metro, rather than 75,000 in Grant Park (tickets for the gig were announced via Foo Fighter/ QOTSA fan clubs). Meaning that, in a lot of ways, this was the most sought-after ticket in town.
Taking the stage just after midnight, the Vultures — Grohl on drums (of course), Homme on guitar and vocals, Jones on bass and keys and frequent QOTSA contributor Alain Johannes on guitar — ripped through 12 songs in 80 minutes, all taken from their upcoming debut, which may or may not be called Never Deserved the Future, and may or may not be hitting stores on October 23 (early "promo" videos touting both those facts were revealed over the weekend to be hoaxes perpetrated by QOTSA fans).
The songs, with appropriately Homme-ian titles like "Scumbag Blues," "Mind Eraser (No Chaser)," "Caligulove" and "Interlude w/Ludes," sounded pretty much how you'd expect, given the band's pedigree. They rocked, hard — Chicago Tribune critic Greg Kot described them as "fresh, invigorating and just plain nasty" — delving off into psychedelic, reverb-filled excursions and exploring proggy territory, "both of the old-school Yes variety, and the more modern Tool flavor," according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Jim DeRogatis.
It's not known if Monday's Metro performance was a one-off event for the Vultures — there have been whispers of a full-blown tour, but a spokesperson for Homme had not responded to MTV News' request for comment at press time. Nor was it clear whether or not they'll have an album out in October.
Early Monday, a Crooked Vultures Twitter account, which had previously posted links to the band's official-looking Web site and the Metro's online ticketing site — posted a link to what appears to be the group's first bit of official merchandise: a Deserve the Future T-shirt. Cost: $30.

'I just really wanted the international audience to come in and just see what we're really about,' he tells MTV News.

For diamond-selling dancehall artist Shaggy, the homecoming festivities he experienced over the weekend in Jamaica were as sweet as his new single "Sugar Cane."
On Saturday, "Mr. Boombastic" took his melodic reggae sounds back to the island that made him famous, performing a free show in front of his fellow Jamaicans with the assistance of a few other notable reggae stars. The concert, called "Shaggy and Friends," came on the heels of the release of his 10th studio album, Summer in Kingston.
"It's home. This is my hometown. This is where I was born, where I was raised," Shaggy told MTV News following the performance. "This is where I currently live. I just really wanted the international audience to come in and just see what we're really about. This dancehall music is alive, this reggae music is alive. There's an audience here."
Hundreds of fans lined Knutsford Boulevard starting at 7 p.m. for the show, which got under way a few hours later. The smell of Jamaican jerk and a certain green leaf wafted through the humid air as Bounty Killer, Elephant Man, Chino, Di Genius, Agent Sasco, Christopher Martin, Leftside, QQ and others warmed up the stage for Shaggy.
According to producer Di Genius, the evening was another shining moment in the superstar's music career. "To have such a huge show like this in the streets of Jamaica is definitely groundbreaking, but it goes hand-in-hand with the type of artist that [Shaggy is]," Genius said. "Shaggy has been breaking ground throughout the years. Shaggy is a 9 million-selling dancehall artist, and that's something that's really not normal. Definitely a groundbreaking event for the country."
The day prior, Shaggy capped a week of promotional events to support his "feel-good album," as he described it, with a performance on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno." Shaggy debuted the clip for his crossover single "Sugar Cane" as the intro to Saturday's show. Starting this week, Shaggy will embark on an international run to further support the album, but for the reggae legend, it's the more natural moments such as this weekend's epic concert that define him as an artist.
"This is home," Shaggy declared. "And you're nowhere unless you're respected at home."
What do you think of Shaggy's new music? Let us know in the comments!

Justin Timberlake also wanted to sign Bieber, 'Never Say Never' star said in 2009.

Just as the world was learning who Justin Bieber was, MTV News caught up with the shaggy-haired singer in September 2009. He was gearing up to release his debut album, My World, and plotting his pop-world domination. In the year and a half since that interview, Bieber has done the nearly impossible, launching himself into the pop mega-sphere.
In the chat, Bieber recalled how he and his manager, Scooter Braun, met and eventually got big names interested in signing the teen.
"My manager found me on YouTube. He flew me out to Atlanta for the first time — I'd never actually been on a plane before. He flew me to Atlanta where i was going to the studio to meet some people," he recalled.
"And Usher happened to roll up in his Range Rover. I ran up to him, and I was like, 'Usher, I love your songs. Want me to sing you one?' The politest possible way he could say no, he did. ... I took the hint. I didn't get to sing for him: He had to run into a studio session."
But later, Usher was beckoning the teen back to the ATL. "He actually watched my videos — after my manager got to talking to him — and was like, 'I should have let this kid sing,' and flew me back to Atlanta where I got to sing for him in a proper setting. A week later, I had a meeting with Justin Timberlake, who also wanted to sign me, so they both kind of wanted me."
As the story goes, Bieber went with Usher, and the two never looked back.
"As far as Usher being my mentor, he's definitely given me words of wisdom. I hear it from everybody, but definitely to hear it from Usher is great, just to stay humble and grounded is very important," he explained.
"There's a lot of people, especially young stars, that have gone down the wrong path, and I definitely plan to stay humble and stay grounded and keep my family first, because that stuff really is important in life."
On Friday, Justin Bieber's 3-D documentary, "Never Say Never," opens. The film takes a look at how the teen star worked to hit it big. MTV News has been chatting with him along the way, from the time he first burst on the scene in 2009 until now, as he embarks on a huge 2011 that will include a tour and more new music.
