Although Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are reluctant to publicly discuss the details of their romance, they are far less shy about showing support for each other in the form of surprise concert appearances, tweets and words of appreciation and encouragement.

When MTV News caught up with Bieber at the Teen Choice Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, just before he took home three of the coveted surfboards for Choice Male Artist, Choice Male Hottie and Choice TV Villain, we asked him which of the evening's musical acts he was looking forward to between Gomez, Jason Derülo and OneRepublic.

"Best performance of the night, Selena Gomez," he boldly predicted of his lady friend's yet-to-be-seen performance of "Love You Like a Love Song," which, coincidentally enough, went on to take home the award for Choice Love Song. (Gomez also won awards for Choice Female Hottie, Choice TV Actress Comedy, Choice Music Group and Choice Music Single for "Who Says.")

Bieber went on to say that it's easy to admire the "Wizards of Waverly Place" actress because she's a down-to-earth, genuine person.

"I feel like she's relatable to a lot of different teenagers. She's kind of girl-next-door; she's real cool. She's very nice," he said with a smile. "She's a very nice girl."

After Bieber spoke to MTV News, Gomez and her band the Scene provided the screaming masses in attendance with a rousing rendition of their breakout ballad. Gomez wore a leg-baring gown, adding in some throwback glam with a veiled headpiece.

Ke$ha Is Channeling 'Sexiness' Of '70s Rock For New Album

Glitter-heavy pop star tells MTV News she's going for 'balls-out, irreverent rock and roll.'

Ke$ha's already got the face paint down pat, and, during recent live sets, she's even taken to guzzling blood out of a human heart, so it should come as no surprise that, on her upcoming album, the pop star is taking things back to the most theatrical era of rock: the prop-heavy, arena-spanning heyday of the 1970s.

Ke$h revealed her plans over the weekend in Los Angeles, on the red carpet of KIIS FM's annual Wango Tango concert, where she told MTV News that the follow-up to her breakout Animal album (and, we suppose, Cannibal too) would be heavy on hard riffs and light on pretty much everything else.

"The next album ... I've been working on writing on the road, but as far as a sound, I just know it's gonna be balls-out, irreverent rock and roll," she said. "I've been pretty much in this '70s rock and roll kick and I just want to capture some of the true essence of what rock and roll is, and that's just irreverence and sexiness and fun and not giving a f---, so we'll definitely put a bit of rock and roll in it."

So, does that mean that fans can expect the likes of Alice Cooper or Peter Frampton to show up on her new album? Perhaps. Because while Ke$ha's new album is still a ways off, she's already begun calling in favors, hoping to line up a killer collabo for the new disc.

"I'm trying, trust me," she laughed. "I really would love to connect with one of my idols, I mean, that's my dream. I'm working on it."

What do you think of Ke$ha going rock for her next album? Tell us in the comments!

Natalie Portman First Post-Baby Film Role: Playing Angela Lansbury's Mom?

Natalie Portman First Post-Baby Film Role: Playing Angela Lansbury's Mom?

Is Natalie Portman's maternity leave over? The actress, who gave birth to son Aleph in June, is reportedly in "informal" talks for the lead role in a new indie drama.

According to TheWrap, the 30-year-old Black Swan actress has been offered the starring role in Adaline, an indie film about a woman who stops aging after a strange accident. According to an earlier press release, the character "was killed in a car accident, until a simultaneous lightning strike resuscitated her and physiologically locked her in her late 20s. Adaline lives a solitary existence until she meets a man worth losing her immortality for." Katherine Heigl was originally attached to star, but dropped out in November.

While the film sounds cool, the news is surprising -- if only because Portman seemed so excited about taking a long maternity leave.

"I imagine I'm going to want to be home for years, just me and my baby," she told Newsweek in January. She did, however, note that her friends told her otherwise: "Everybody says after two months you go out of your mind."

Maybe Portman is being tempted by Adaline because of the rare opportunity to work with another great actress: Angela Lansbury. The 85-year-old actress -- who has five Tonys, 15 Emmy nominations and three Oscar nominations -- has taken only two film roles in the past decade. If Portman signs on to play the immortal lead character, she won't only get to star with Lansbury -- she'll get to play her mother! That's an offer she won't get again, and perhaps reason enough for husband Benjamin Millepied to stay home with the baby for awhile.

LOS ANGELES -- You always remember your first time. That's why Nashville buzz band Hot Chelle Rae have spent this weekend soaking up every ounce of energy they can from the vortex of awesome surrounding Sunday's 2011 VMAs.

"It feels amazing. We are so stoked to be out here and not watching from the couch this year," said "Tonight Tonight" singer Ryan Follese. "It's gonna be really, really exciting." Asked whom he would like to celeb-stalk at the show, Follese didn't hesitate, picking Nicki Minaj as his obsessive target of choice, based on his hope that she "might have on something insane."

Guitarist Nash Overstreet said he had his sights set on Lady Gaga, but was afraid she might be too dangerous to stalk because it's possible she'd be wearing something "that could kill you."

When they're not plotting who to spy on at the show, Hot Chelle Rae have been busy putting the finishing touches on their new album, which bassist Ian Keaggy said is slated to come out in November. "If you like 'Tonight Tonight,' honestly, then you're going to love the record," Follese said. "There are moments of songs about tense feelings, but for the most part it's an upbeat, really, really fun record."

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Katy Perry: From VMA Rookie To VMA Royalty

This year's top nominee has yet to win a Moonman, but she did nab a husband!

At Sunday's VMAs, one very kooky, colorful California Gurl is poised to rule the night: Katy Perry tops the nominees with a whopping nine nods for "E.T.," "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," "Teenage Dream" and "Firework."

"It's always exciting to be a part of the VMAs because there's so much spontaneity," she told MTV News. "I just remember growing up seeing craziness ensued with the VMAs. I wasn't allowed to see it, but I done watched it!"

While Perry has yet to win a Moonman, the show has played an important role in her career and personal life in other interesting ways. Let's take a look back at Perry's short-but-memorable history with the Video Music Awards and look forward to what she can expect Sunday night:

2008
Kinga Burza, the director of Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" video, warned MTV News that the up-and-coming pop star would soon be a force to be reckoned with. "She's fresh, original, intelligent and talented, with a star-like charisma, which will have boys and girls all around the world cooing for more," Burza said.

And she was right. Perry made her VMA debut that year, singing along with the night's house band, Travis Barker and the late DJ AM. That night, "I Kissed a Girl" was up for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Female Video and Best New Artist.

She went home empty-handed, but the show was the first time (and certainly not the last) that she and host Russell Brand crossed paths.

2009
The VMAs returned to New York City, and Perry had become a household name. She was nominated for Best Female Video for "Hot n Cold" and opened the show with a rocking performance of Queen's "We Will Rock You" alongside Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry.

Although she didn't take any prizes home, she did manage to nab Brand, who hosted the show for a second year. Perry said she saw a different side of the comedian during and after the show. "I really appreciate his sense of humor," she explained. "It's real dark, it's real wrong and it's really funny."

Explore our "Katy Perry: By The Numbers" infographic:

2010
Perry hit the white-hot VMA carpet in Los Angeles, and was by then one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Her relationship with Brand had escalated to an engagement, and her sweet and sassy "California Gurls" video, featuring Snoop Dogg, was nominated for Best Female Video and Best Pop Video.

"I like the idea of this being like a board game," she said of the video in 2009. "It's kind of like Candy Land. That was probably one of my favorite games to play growing up. I like to bring back those pure childhood moments and give them a little bit of a naughty twist, of course."

2011
Perry is coming up on her fourth VMA appearance, and this could finally be her year. She's back in her home state of California, she's tied the knot with Brand, and she's broken all sorts of records with the songs from her Teenage Dream album, including becoming the first female artist with five #1 singles from the same album.

Considering she's up for hardware in categories like best Female Video ("Firework"), Video of the Year ("Firework") and Best Collaboration ("E.T.") featuring Kanye West, to name a few, her chances of bringing home a Moonman or two are looking good.
